[origin: EP0442429A2] The carriage guided on a stair rail is equipped with a solid catch lever (28) which is pivotably arranged transversely to the travel direction (32) so close to the stair rail that it can swing with its descent-side lever arm (39) against the action of a tension spring (34) into the area between two adjacent rungs (7) and (7a) which are arranged on the stair rail perpendicularly to the travel direction (32). The tension spring (34) attempts to move the catch lever (28) into a position pointing in the travel direction (32). On its longitudinal side pointing towards the stair rail, the catch lever (28) has on its ascent-side arm a lobe-like projection (45) which pivots the catch lever (28) during descending travel on each rung (7) in such a way that the descent-side arm of the catch lever (39) enters the intermediate space relative to the next rung (7). If the descending travel exceeds a predetermined speed, the catch lever (28), on account of its inertia, cannot escape quickly enough from the area of the rungs (7) and stops the carriage. <IMAGE>
