[origin: EP0443141A2] A switching arrangement for controlling a ventilator (3), in particular in an extractor hood (2) above a cooker (1), depending upon vapour passing to the ventilator (3), is to detect the vapour simply and safely and use it for switching the ventilator (3). To this end, there is arranged in front of the ventilator (3) an ultrasonic section (6). A receiving circuit demodulates the signal appearing at the ultrasonic receiver (8). An evaluating circuit (10) evaluates temporal fluctuations of the received signal (Ua), which are based on vapour in the ultrasonic section (6), and counts these within a time base. A reference circuit (11) compares the counting result with preset values and switches the ventilator (3) accordingly. <IMAGE>
