[origin: EP0444409A1] A bookbinding machine for rounding the backs of book blocks, having a conveying device which clamps the book block and having a back-rounding device consisting of rounding rollers which, when the book block has been released by the conveying device, act on both sides of the book block by a defined rotary movement and by pressure, is characterised in terms of a substantial improvement in performance in that rounding rollers (7, 8) are provided in a conveying device having book block clamps (2) which can be moved continuously in a closed-loop circulating path, which rounding rollers can be driven synchronously with the book block clamps (2) along a path of movement, in which case the rounding rollers (7, 8) can be moved back and forth through recesses (3a, 4a) in clamping jaws (3, 4) of the book block clamps (2) for carrying out the rounding operation at the sides of the book block (1). Furthermore, the rounding rollers (7, 8) can be moved vertically in the recesses (3a, 4a) of the clamping jaws (3, 4) and the vertical movement is superimposed on the rotary movement of the rounding rollers (7, 8) in such a way that the vertical movement of the book block (1) generated as a result of the rotary movement is compensated, the outlying sheets or printed sheets of said book block preferably being held at a constant level. <IMAGE>
