[origin: EP0445516A1] To produce silver nitrate, use is made of an apparatus comprising a cathode chamber (3) having a silver-free cathode (9) immersed in nitric acid, an anode chamber (4) having a silver anode (8) immersed in nitric acid, and an anion exchanger membrane (2) separating the cathode chamber (3) and the anode chamber (4). The concentration of nitric acid in the cathode chamber (3) is higher than in the anode chamber (4). When a direct voltage is applied, silver is anodically dissolved and nitrate ions migrate through the anion exchanger membrane (2) into the anode space. Virtually no undesired nitrogen oxides are produced in this process. <IMAGE>
