[origin: EP0445539A2] A mattress (1), especially for use by a patient suffering from bedsores and/or incontinence, contains, on at least one of its sides, at least one region (3; 4; 5) in which the consistency of the surface of the mattress can be locally modified. Each such region has a recess with at least one separately removable insert part (6, 7, 8, 9, 10), the recess being completely surrounded by the remainder of the mattress in such a manner that the latter forms an elastically resilient but inherently rigid frame for the one or more separately removable insert parts, and the mattress surface, provided that all insert parts are inserted, forms a continuous lying surface together with the surfaces of these insert parts. <IMAGE>
