[origin: EP0445708A2] A process for the preparation of foamed fibres from polyester, with which sodium carbonate and citric acid as propellant as well as polycarbonate are admixed before spinning, is described. The proportion of propellant is 0.15 to 0.80 per cent by weight of the polyester and the proportion of polycarbonate 0.5 to 2 per cent by weight of the polyester. As a result of the process according to the invention, foamed fibres, i.e. filaments or staple fibres having non-penetrating cavities can be prepared, which can be used, for example, as carpet fibres and filling fibres for covers and cushions or as a lining material for winter clothing.
