[origin: EP0447387A1] A process for continuous casting, especially non ferrous metals by means of a mould which has a cooled, in particular water-cooled, outer metal jacket (1) and an inner single- or multi-part graphite mould (2) which shapes the cross-section of the strand, a shielding gas, e.g. nitrogen, being introduced into the graphite mould (1). The graphite mould (1) is here supplied with the shielding gas for the casting operation, the gas passing through the mould, thereby forming a diffusion barrier transversely to the casting direction. <IMAGE>
