[origin: WO9006186A1] The invention concerns a process for the production of multi-layer coatings, which uses a pigmented aqueous base coating composition containing a water-dilutable emulsion polymer as the film-forming material. The water-dilutable emulsion polymer is produced by two-stage emulsion polymerization. In the first stage, a polymer with a glass transition temperature (TG1?) of +30 to +110C is produced. In the second stage, a monomer mixture which, if polymerized alone, would give a polymer with a glass transition temperature (TG2?) of -60 to +20C is polymerized in the presence of the polymer produced in the first stage. The hydroxyl number of the emulsion polymer lies between 2 and 100.
