[origin: WO9103664A1] A spring (10) comprises a first bypass (26a, 28a, 30, 32) with a one-way valve (30) that allows fluid to bypass the piston (26) when the piston moves outward, a second bypass (32) with a spring-biased valve (30) that allows fluid to bypass the piston (26) when the piston (26) is pushed inward with a force exceeding the combined gas-spring and spring-biased valve forces, and a third bypass (40, 42, 50) having a temperature-responsive valve (44) that allows fluid to bypass the piston (26) when the rod (18) is pushed in but only when the temperature of the gas exceeds a selected level.
