Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0447705A1] A novel solid phosphoric acid catalyst of controlled porosity and process for using this catalyst is disclosed. The catalyst comprises a combination of solid phosphoric acid and a refractory oxide binder to make a porous catalyst system having 25.0 volume percent or less of the total catalyst pore volume consisting of pores having a diameter of 10,000 ANGSTROM or greater. An improvement in catalyst stability is observed when such a catalyst is utilized in a hydrocarbon conversion process of the type that have traditionally used solid phosphoric acid catalysts such as catalytic condensation of olefins to make a desired oligomer or alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbon with an olefin-acting agent.
