[origin: EP0450294A1] The invention relates to a screwdown device for adjusting the roll gap or rolling force in rolling stands. The screwdown device has two hydraulic screwdown cylinders (2) which act on both sides of a work roll (5) to be adjusted. The screwdown cylinders each have two or more piston faces, which can be supplied with pressure medium independently of one another, either individually, in any desired combination or all together. It is thereby possible to improve the control of the rolling force in the respective range in such a way that percentage fluctuations in the rolling force are minimised and, as a consequence, variations in the roughness and wall thickness are reduced to a non prejudicial level. <IMAGE>
