[origin: EP0450348A1] The invention relates to catalytic converters for internal combustion engines. A ceramic honeycomb body (1) coated with a catalyst is fixed radially and axially in a metal casing (3) with the aid of a so-called expanding mat (2). The casing (3) is provided with a casing cone (4), on the inside of which a mat (5) of insulating fibres is mounted with the aid of an internal cone (6). The requisite gap between the end (7.1) of the internal cone (6) and the end face of the honeycomb body (1) is covered with the aid of a fibre packing ring (8.2). The task of this fibre packing ring (8.2) is merely to protect the mat (5) of insulating fibres and the expanding mat (2) from the harmful effects of the exhaust pulsations, to hold the free end (7.1) of the inner cone (6) and to compensate thermally caused length changes between the casing (3), the casing cone (4) and the inner cone (6) in the manner of a sliding seat. <IMAGE>
