[origin: EP0451091A1] The sheet feeder (B), constructed as a buffer store, has a magazine (24) for receiving vertically stacked sheets with a base (26) which releases an edge strip (R) of the sheet pile (S). Moving along this edge strip is a continuous belt (18), to which separating elements (1), provided with a curved suction surface, followed by a plurality of spacers (11) are attached. The edge strip of the bottom sheet is bent downwards from the remaining pile whilst being sucked onto the curved suction surface and is overlapped by the subsequent spacers, on which the remaining pile is supported. After a separating element has passed the edge strip, said edge strip, which is completely bent off from the remaining pile, rests on the undersides of the spacers. From this position, in which the continuous belt (18) is briefly stationary, the edge strip is fed by adjustable suction heads (31) to a conveyor belt (35), whose grippers (37) draw the bottom sheet out from under the pile and transport it away. <IMAGE>
