[origin: EP0451630A1] The buffer provided with buffer springs (8) and a hydraulic damper (4) has a piston rod (2) guided in a sleeve (1), on the end of which rod a piston (5) displaceable in a cylinder (7) is arranged. When the piston (5) is displaced the damping liquid (21) in the cylinder (7) flows through a gap (14) arranged between piston (5) and cylinder (7) into an equalising chamber (10) provided with a gas cushion (22). The piston (5), by virtue of a recess (18), is designed in such a way that, if the internal pressure increases, the gap (14) is reduced or at least remains constant in the event of an impact. <IMAGE>
