[origin: EP0453623A1] A controller with a crank mechanism (13, 14) driving the knife (15) and with a detector (22) which detects the top dead centre of the crank mechanism (13, 14) has a toothed disc (21) revolving synchronously with the crankshaft (13) of the crank mechanism and having a plurality of teeth (4, 3, 2, 1, 0), of which at least one (4, 0) is recognisable for an electronic evaluation unit and the last tooth (0) in the direction of rotation preferably lies opposite the detector (22) in the top dead centre position of the knife (15). This toothed disc makes it possible for the electronic evaluation and control unit connected in series with the detector (22) to stop the folding knife (15) at top dead centre every time, irrespective of the speed of the machine and of the state of wear of the clutch and brake unit (12). It furthermore allows the position of the knife above the folding table to be detected and thus the sheet spacing to be reduced to a minimum. <IMAGE>
