[origin: EP0455295A1] The high pressure discharge lamp has a lamp vessel (21) having a flat seal (22) wherein a recess (31) is present between the current supply conductors (29, 30). the recess (31) extends from the end face of the seal (22) and runs from one major face thereof to the other. The lamp may be mounted in a ceramic cap (40) having a slot (51) extending from the base portion (42) thereof. The slot (51) is separated by walls (52, 53) from the interior (41) of the cap (40). The lamp has a rigid structure, is easy to manufacture and provides increased resistance to flash-over when started on a high voltage pulse. <IMAGE>
