[origin: WO9108563A2] The device includes at least one electro-optical display means, such as a liquid crystal cell, a number of basic patterns linked to said electro-optical display means and for the most part shaped, on the basis of a series of selected stylised alphanumerical characters, as a composite mosaic-type structure, the raster of which consists of the patterns which have heterogenous and complementary outlines and which are arranged to interlock like the pieces of a puzzle. The device is characterized in that the mosaic is crosshatched by optically passive stripes which partially cover some of the basic patterns and divide up the mosaic. This electronic display device can be used in devices for displaying alphanumerical characters and messages in public areas such railway station concourses or airports.
