In a process for making a brick which has a holding aid in the form of a recess on at least one side, raw material is extruded in an extrusion operation through an opening of a die and is formed into a continuous body. The recess, serving as a holding aid, in the continuous body is formed by the continuous body being extruded with an intermittently varied contour. A corresponding apparatus has a die with an opening through which raw material can be extruded and formed into a continuous body. An apparatus for forming the recess comprises a device for changing the cross-section of the opening of the die, in which arrangement at least one blade-like diaphragm can be moved for changing the cross-section through which the continuous body is extruded and can be made to overlap the latter. With the apparatus, instead of producing a holding aid, the motion of the continuous column can also be regulated so as to be of limited duration. <IMAGE>

In einem Verfahren zum Herstellen eines Ziegels, der an zumindest einer Seitenfläche eine Griffhilfe in Form einer Vertiefung aufweist, wird ein Rohmaterial in einem Strangpreßvorgang durch eine Öffnung eines Mundstückes extrudiert und in einen Strangkörper geformt. Die als Griffhilfe dienende Vertiefung in dem Strangkörper wird ausgebildet, indem der Strangkörper mit zeitweilig veränderter Kontur extrudiert wird. Eine entsprechende Vorrichtung weist ein Mundstück mit einer Öffnung auf, durch die hindurch ein Rohmaterial extrudierbar und in einen Strangkörper formbar ist. Eine Vorrichtung zur Ausbildung der Vertiefung umfaßt eine Einrichtung zur Änderung des Querschnittes der Öffnung des Mundstückes, wobei zumindest eine messerartige Blende zur Änderung des Querschnitts, durch den hindurch der Strangkörper extrudiert wird, bewegbar und in Überlagerung mit diesem bringbar ist. Mit der Vorrichtung kann, anstatt eine Griffhilfe zu erzeugen, auch der Stranglauf zeitlich begrenzt reguliert werden. <IMAGE>
