[origin: EP0468202A1] The invention proposes a roller tappet for the actuation of gas exchange valves (1,1a,1b) of internal combustion engines, the said tappet being provided with a hydraulic valve-clearance compensation element (10,10a,10b). In order to minimise the installation space and keep down the overall height, the rollers (9,9a,9b), which interact with a cam (2), and the compensating element are arranged essentially adjacent to one another. In particular, it is provided that a single tappet (4) should actuate two adjacent gas exchange valves (1a,1b), it also being possible for two diametrically opposite rollers arranged on the outside of the tappet housing (5a,5b) to be provided. <IMAGE>
