[origin: WO9013236A1] An auxiliary handle (10) for use with containers such as bags, pails, or cardboard cartons having handle portions included therewith has a longitudinally arcuate base portion (12) and a pair of side walls (14, 16) converging upwardly from opposite sides of the base portion (12). In one embodiment a generally triangular rib (72) extends inwardly from the inner surface of one side wall (54) and is interleaved with a pair of similar ribs (74) on the inner surface of the other side wall (56). In another embodiment a pair of parallel opposed narrow (32, 34, 36, 38) ribs is provided on each side wall defining a narrow gap (9) therebetween at their point of closest approach. The outer wall or bottom surface of the base portion (12) has transverse finger-receiving recesses (20) therein. The auxiliary handle fits over the handle portion of the container and helps distribute the weight of the container more evenly to ease the load on the person carrying the container. The ribs prevent inadvertent release of the auxiliary handle from the container handle.
