[origin: EP0472870A2] An apparatus for pressing waste, especially pressable refuse, having a press piston with a press plate in a lower region of a receiving space for the refuse in the apparatus housing, which is arranged horizontally displaceably and which conveys the refuse into a container adjoining the receiving space and compresses it there, is to be so designed that a safe and wear-resistant covering is guaranteed, the space taken up by this being as small as possible. <??>For this, according to the invention, the receiving space is filled continuously, there being mounted on the press piston a shovel which is rotatable about a horizontal axis and which has an acute-angled edge engaging under the refuse in the receiving space during the return stroke and facing away from the press plate, and at the end of the return stroke the shovel being tiltable with the acute-angled edge upwards about its axis, so that the refuse under which the shovel has engaged is conveyed in front of the press plate of the press piston.
