[origin: WO9015401A1] Apparatus for charging travel of a vehicle in congested traffic situations comprises a receiver (1) for accommodating a medium (2), carrying data related to prepaid units, first monitoring means for monitoring distance travelled by the vehicle, second monitoring means for monitoring at least one further variable, calculating means responsive to the first and second monitoring means for generating a charge signal indicative of a chargeable unit should the relationship between distance travelled and the further variable indicate a given level of congestion, and means operative in response to a charge signal to decrease the number of prepaid units carried by the medium.
