[origin: WO9100029A1] A block of compressed, stratified material such as a bale (10) of tobacco is placed in a receptacle (40) which executes reciprocating motion. Movement of the receptacle (40) brings the bale (10) into engagement with a fixed blade (46) which splits the bale (10) between strata, the unsupported weight of the slice (48) being separated assisting the splitting. A photodetector (62) initiates the loading of a further bale (10) when uncovered. The further bale (10) is carried by an indexing conveyor (42) mounted on a wheeled chassis (64) which moves the conveyor (42) over the remainder of the bale in the framework (40) then retreats leaving the further bale (10) on top of the remainder.

On place un bloc de matière stratifiée comprimée tel qu'une balle (10) de tabac, dans un réceptacle (40) exécutant un mouvement de va-et-vient. Le mouvement dudit réceptacle (40) amène la balle (10) en contact avec une lame fixe (46) laquelle coupe ladite balle (10) entre des strates, le poids non supporté de la tranche (48) qui est en train d'être séparée aidant la coupe. Un photodétecteur (62) déclenche le chargement d'une autre balle (10) lorsqu'il n'est pas couvert. L'autre balle (10) est portée par un convoyeur d'indexage (42) monté sur un châssis à roues (64) lequel déplace ledit convoyeur (42) sur le reste de ladite balle dans le cadre (40), puis se retire en laissant l'autre balle (10) au-dessus du reste.
