[origin: EP0478823A1] The honing machine has a column (1) on which a supporting frame (5) for a work-holding fixture (7) and a reciprocating and rotary drive (15, 17) for the work spindle (10) are supported. Clamped in the work spindle (10) is a honing tool (11) which is passed through a top opening (12) of the supporting frame (5). Displacements can occur in the column structure due to temperature changes and other operationally induced effects, in the course of which the position of the cross beam (4) which carries the drive (15, 17) can change relative to the supporting frame (5). In order to nonetheless maintain accurate coaxial alignment of the honing tool (11) relative to the bore axis of the workpiece (6), the work spindle (10) is mounted in a bearing block (9) on which the reciprocating drive (15) acts and which is traversable along a guide (8) which is rigidly fastened to the supporting frame (5). In this arrangement, the honing tool (11) does not need to be guided in the top opening (12) of the supporting frame (5), so that no wear occurs there and in addition the machine accordingly has a small overall height.
