[origin: WO9116258A1] In a device for guiding and tensioning a cloth with at least one cloth guide arranged obliquely to the cloth running direction, having a rotatable control roller (1) and a rotatable counter-roller (2) parallel thereto, taking an edge region (K1?, K2?) between them, and also having a pressure member (3) engaging with the control roller to press the control roller against the counter-roller, a sensor device generating correcting signals proportional to the edge position and a control device to adjust the pressure member and affected by the correcting signals in order to correct any cloth offset, the pressure member (3) is steplessly adjustable up to a limit (Q) on the length of roller engagement which is still acceptable for cloth offset correction and varies the clamping force without lifting the control roller off completely. The pressure member (3) cannot be adjusted to release the clamping force until length of engagement is less than the limit (Q).
