[origin: EP0480813A1] The invention relates to the colour image display devices of the type in which the light is spatially modulated by a liquid crystal screen (MS). The aim of the invention is to improve the luminous effectiveness and the colour image resolution in such display devices. <??>The display device of the invention comprises a source of light (2) and a liquid crystal screen (MS). According to the invention each cell (C1 to C5) of the liquid crystal screen (MS) comprises means (12, 13) for modulating the two orthogonal polarisations of the light independently of each other. <IMAGE>
