Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0481110A1] The present invention relates to a rotary conditioning drum (1) particularly usable for drying tobacco. The drum (1), which comprises heating means such as a gas or oil burner or steam heating means, has, in the latter case, longitudinal heating units which are constituted by bundles of tubes which are connected to a delivery manifold for injecting steam, and has the peculiarity of comprising at least one conveyor element (11), such as a conveyor belt (11), which is movable axially to the drum (1). The conveyor belt (11) is controlled, in its motion, by an external humidity measurement unit (13,14) and by means for controlling the thermal capacity of the drum (1). The drum (1) finally comprises, in the case of steam heating means, means for collecting and recovering the condensate at the tobacco feed side (9). The presence of the movable conveyor belt (11) allows, if the humidity of the tobacco in output deviates from the desired value, to axially move the belt (11) inside the drum (1) to the point at which the tobacco is at the required humidity. It is thus possible to obtain, in an extremely effective manner, a variation in the "useful" length of the drum (1) with a consequent extremely rapid and precise response during transient periods. <IMAGE>
