[origin: EP0481181A1] The nipper assembly has a nipper bottom part (4) and a nipper top part (5) and comprises a front feed cylinder (13) and a rear feed cylinder (14). The two feed cylinders (13, 14) are rotated intermittently during operation in order to move a lap (W), which has been fed in and is to be combed, stepwise towards the clamping line of the nipper assembly. In this case, the two feed cylinders (13, 14) are pressed resiliently against one another, for example by means of springs, in order to bring about the required frictional engagement between the feed cylinders (13, 14) and the lap (W) which passes between the feed cylinders (13, 14). With this type of lap movement, fibre shifts in the lap (W) are avoided even if said lap is relatively thick. At the same time, the front feed cylinder (13) is pressed resiliently against a nipper plate (7, 15) of the nipper bottom part (4) at a short distance after the clamping line of the nipper assembly. When a combed-out fibre tuft is torn out of the lap (W), this fibre tuft thus takes fewer uncombed fibre bundles with it from the lap (W). <IMAGE>
