[origin: WO9118120A1] A smelting plant is disclosed with two adjacent, alternatively operated smelting furnaces (1/1, 1/2). The furnace gases produced during smelting are introduced into the other smelting furnace in order to pre-heat its charge. A shaft (12/1, 12/2) associated with each smelting furnace is filled with charge and the flue gases of the furnace in operation pass through the corresponding shaft (12/1, 12/2) and enter through the cover plate (4/1, 4/2) of the other furnace, once it has been charged. This makes it possible to pre-heat the charge and to filter the furnace gases through the charge during the entire smelting process.
