[origin: WO9101545A1] In a vector excitation source digital speech coder utilizing vector excitation, candidate excitation sources (111, 121) are considered independent of certain pitch parameters. Once a particular excitation source has been selected, the excluded pitch parameter may then be optimized, resulting in an overall improvement in speech quality.
