[origin: EP0484624A1] The invention proposes a thermostatic valve (10) for controlling the temperature of the cooling liquid of an internal combustion engine, in which an adjustable supporting part (26) is provided as an abutment for the working plunger (14) of a thermostat based on an expanding material which actuates the valve disc (17). The supporting part (26) is arranged coaxially to the working piston (14) and connected to the latter and is acted upon in the opposite direction to the valve closing direction by means of a spring (35) and pressed into its initial position. The supporting part (26) is adjustable counter to the action of the spring (35) by means of an actuating member (36), in particular a thermostatic working element (37), this working element (37) being electrically heatable. By this means, the working range of the thermostatic valve (10) can be adjusted, for example to a higher opening temperature (winter operation). If the heating fails, the thermostatic valve (10) is adjusted automatically to the other working position by the spring (35) acting on the supporting part (26), resulting, for example, in a lower opening temperature. <IMAGE>
