[origin: EP0485755A2] An overload protection system for a mechanically driven press is proposed which utilises the maximum press force, i.e. the nominal press force, in the ram even with very irregular loading of the drive fittings, without the overload protection system becoming active beforehand. This occurs according to the invention in that a higher force acting on one drive fitting is compensated by a corresponding application of force on the other drive fitting. For this purpose, it is necessary to generate on the side of the press ram with a reduced effective force a corresponding additional force by the application of pressure. This additional force is generated by an additional, controllable pressure pad (22), the additional force generated being of such a size that the pressure-overloading valve is released when the maximum permissible nominal press force is exceeded. <IMAGE>
