[origin: EP0487939A1] The invention relates to a can opener comprising an electric motor (2) driving in rotation a shaft (4) carrying a small wheel (7) as well as a cutting roller (9), the said shaft being mounted both in a rotary manner and so that it is axially movable by means of a two-directional drive mechanism comprising a compression spring (14) and of a device for reversing the direction of rotation of the shaft comprising two electric "start" (16) and "stop" (17) switches which are mounted in the supply circuit of the motor. <??>According to the invention, the spring (14) comprises two parts, a cylindrical part (19) with contiguous turns and a frustoconical part (21) with non-contiguous turns of which a free end (22) is capable either of coming up against a finger (23) arranged on a wall (6) of the casing (1) or of coming up against the stop switch (17) so as to cut the supply to the motor. <??>Application to domestic can openers. <IMAGE>
