[origin: EP0489229A2] Hand-operated staplers require, in particular when driving in the staples and penetrating the material to be stapled, a considerable effort, which entails disadvantages for the user. The stapler according to the invention possesses a locking and releasing mechanism which keeps the impact cutter (24) via a catch (45) temporarily in a position which is unchanging with respect to the staple (G) to be driven in and, on the other hand, brings about a sudden release of the impact cutter (24) onto the staple (G) to be driven in, and hence the actual stapling operation, in the unlocked position of the catch (45) via a spring (40) tensioned by actuating the upper part (30) of the stapler and connected to the impact cutter (24). According to the invention, after the automatic stapling operation a force peak can be used manually if a final thrust is required for a thicker stack of paper. <IMAGE>
