[origin: WO9103587A1] The sewing machine is provided with stitch-forming and material transport means, as well as with a microprocessor which is connected to a write/read memory for time-storage of the basic patterns which can be modified by the control programmes, with a keyboard for selecting a basic pattern and for the entry of corrections to pre-set parameters of the basic pattern and with a display unit for showing the characteristic values of a basic pattern or of its parameters. In order to be able to select in a simple and trouble-free manner the pre-determined basic patterns, the display unit (56) has a unique point-matrix display, the display field of which can be switched by the microprocessor, depending on the values entered via the keyboard (58), either fully or in partial fields to different display forms (56a to 56c). The keys (58a) of the keyboard (58) are provided with symbols (0...9). The display forms of the display unit (58) portray patterns of designations to which various symbols are attributed (0...9). The symbols indicated in the display forms (0...9) at least partly match the symbols (0...9) of the keys (58a) of the keyboard (58). The microprocessor (42) activates those keys (58a) whose symbol (0...9) matches the symbols (0...9) in the display form of the display unit (56), for selection of the relevant basic pattern or for operating the appropriate control means (12, 31) for the stitch position and/or the advance.
