For the purpose of exactly determining the sifting limit it is proposed that the material for sifting be introduced into an upper opening of a gravity chute (3) which has an open chute base (4). In addition to the material (1) for sifting, air is drawn in through the upper (entry) opening (2) of the gravity chute (3) and taken up in the tangential area of a drum-shaped airstream (air eddy stream 17, 21, 21', 21'', 21''') rotating in eddies. The material for sifting and air are exposed to the interplay of forces of the centrifugal and friction force of the airstream which is also carried along, in which case as a result of the centrifugal force of the air eddy stream the coarse-grade material is separated off and discharged through the open chute base (14).
