Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0493315A1] The sealing between two machine parts has on one of the mutually facing surfaces (5), forming the sealing gap, a layer of plastic (1) with reinforcements (8) provided in close arrangement next to one another, which reinforcements have the form of partially cut-off bubbles of a foam plastic structure. They were created by removal of a layer of plastic (3) foamed onto the machine part, the layer thickness having been reduced evenly to such an extent that the bubbles (4) of the lowermost bubble layer (4), adjacent to the base surface (5) of the machine part (2), are opened. It is achieved in this way that the insulating effect of closed bubbles of a layer of foam plastic is avoided and that the layer of plastic has a very low weight, by which the risk of any detachment of the layer by centrifugal forces is avoided. In addition, a honeycomb-like open surface structure is achieved in a simple way, so that a labyrinth effect is obtained in the sealing gap. To achieve minimal sealing gaps by contracting, the open, honeycomb-like surface structure is particularly advantageous, since the contact occurring thereby, which is only linear, ensures a rapid contracting on the counter surface, which may be abrasively prepared. The sealing is suitable in particular for very quickly rotating machine parts. <IMAGE>
