[origin: EP0493696A1] To improve the uniformity of the brine concentration when using salt of different grain size, a salt container (1) for water softeners of household appliances, particularly dishwashing machines, having a salt-receiving compartment (4) which has a filling opening (2) and is separated from a brine collection compartment (7) by a screen (6), having a water inlet pipe (9) opening out into the salt-receiving compartment (4), and having a brine outlet pipe (8) leading from the brine collection compartment (7) into an ion exchanger of the water softener, incorporates at least one partition (10) which runs essentially horizontally and is provided with at least one opening (11) through which fine-grain salt (5) can flow, but coarse-grain salt cannot flow. <IMAGE>
