[origin: US5273724A] The catalytic converter has a casing with two one-piece shells. These each have a curved section and flanges projecting outward away therefrom. The flanges are welded to one another in pairs and make an angle with one another at least in a substantial part of their lengths and, for example, over their entire lengths. In the production of the catalytic converter, the shells can be produced simply and economically with the aid of a shaping process. After at least one dimensionally stable core and an elastically deformable intermediate layer surrounding this core have been arranged between the two shells, the latter are pressed against one another with a predetermined compressive force and are welded to one another. In the mass production of catalytic converter, their cores can be installed readily and without damage in the casing, even in the case of relatively large deviations from the intended ideal shapes and ideal dimensions.

Der Katalysator (1) weist ein Gehäuse (5) mit zwei einstückigen Schalen (7, 9) auf. Diese haben je einen gewölbten Abschnitt (7a, 9a) und von diesem weg nach aussen ragende Flansche (7e, 9e). Die Flansche (7e, 9e) sind paarweise miteinander verschweisst und bilden mindestens in einem wesentlichen Teil ihrer Längen und beispielsweise über ihre ganze Längen miteinander einen Winkel. Beim Herstellen des Katalysators (1) können die Schalen (7, 9) mit Hilfe eines Umformverfahrens einfach und kostengünstig hergestellt werden. Nachdem mindestens ein formfester Kern (23) und eine diesen bzw. jeden Kern (23) umhüllende, elastisch deformierbare Zwischenlage (27) zwischen den beiden Schalen (7, 9) angeordnet wurde, werden diese mit einer vorgegebenen Druckkraft gegeneinander gedrückt und miteinander verschweisst. Bei der serienmässigen Herstellung von Katalysatoren (1) können deren Kerne (23) auch bei relativ grossen Abweichungen von den vorgesehenen Soll-Formen und Soll-Abmessungen gut und ohne Beschädigungen in die Gehäuse (5) eingebaut werden. <IMAGE>
