[origin: EP0497008A2] A process for grinding the outer contour of cams or the like is proposed, in which the cam is rough-ground by means of a rough-grinding wheel, provided at its periphery with radially circumferential grooves, in such a way that the rough-grinding wheel is displaced axially after one grinding engagement and then resumes rough-grinding after radial feed, until the nominal size including allowance is reached, the cam being then finish-ground with a finish- grinding wheel. <??>An apparatus suitable for carrying out this process is such that (a) at least one radially circumferential groove is provided on a rough-grinding wheel at its periphery, (b) the width of the rough- grinding wheel is greater than the axial dimension of the cam; (c) a separate finish-grinding wheel is provided for the finish-grinding operation. <IMAGE>
