[origin: EP0500245A2] A cipher communication system for communicating transaction data between a host computer (1) and a portable electronic device (21), wherein the host computer (1) includes a first memory (3) for storing a master key data, a generator (40) for generating a transaction key data which is to be used for enciphering the transaction data, a data converter (7) for enciphering the transaction key data according to the master key data and a first interface (4) for transferring the transaction key data enciphered by the data converter (7), and wherein the portable electronic device (21) includes a second interface (24) for receiving the enciphered transaction key data transferred from the host computer (1), a second memory (231) for storing the master key data, a second data converter (25) for deciphering the enciphered transaction key data received by the second interface (24) and a third memory (232) for storing the transaction key data deciphered by the second data converter (25), and causing the stored transaction key to be erased on completion of the communication.
