[origin: WO9107056A1] A system consisting of a process and suitable device for activating a chip card is simple and reliable and can be incorporated in an apparatus which is fully functional only in combination with an active chip card. A control unit (ECU1) of the apparatus (for example a decoding device) receives from a control unit (ECU2) of the chip card connected to the apparatus a signal which determines the value of an activation voltage. On the basis of said signal, the control unit of the apparatus actuates other stages (3, 5), which supply the requisite activation voltage to the chip card. The system of the invention is preferably used for decoding video signals (pay TV).
