[origin: EP0501879A1] The concrete according to the invention has better durability and mechanical strength characteristics which are equivalent to those of prestressed concrete. It comprises fibres (20) embedded within conventional concrete, these fibres being either fibres of a shape-memory metal alloy, or heat-shrinkable fibres. A subsequent heat treatment enables these fibres to take up a shape making it possible to induce compression stresses throughout the whole volume of the cast concrete. Application to the manufacture of containers for radioactive waste. <IMAGE>
