[origin: EP0502220A1] In a steam boiler having a plurality of passes (3, 4, 15) and a DeNOx unit in the form of a catalyst (14) and an NH3 injection device for reducing the NOx contents in the smoke gas, the catalyst (14) is arranged upstream of the last pass (15), as viewed in the direction of flow of the smoke gases, in a boiler section where the smoke gases are taken downwards. The boiler section upstream of the catalyst (14) is constructed as a smoke tube pass (4). At least one of the smoke tubes (6) forming this smoke tube pass has a diameter greater than that of the other smoke tubes (5) of this pass. The passage cross-section of this smoke tube (6) is controllable by means of a throttle plate (9). This passage cross-section can be enlarged with falling smoke gas temperature. <IMAGE>
