[origin: WO9206466A1] In an on-screen display in which characters and figures are displayed on a screen, the edge-formation processing and the inversion processing are combined together independent of a simple selection processing, in order to diversify the character display patterns. The image display controller comprises image display means (2) which outputs one or more kinds of character display data on the basis of external control signals, first edge-forming means (111) which outputs edge-enhanced character display data on the basis of said character display data, first selection means (131) which selectively outputs said character display data or edge-enhanced character display data, first inversion means (121) which outputs inverted character display data or edge-enhanced inverted character display data on the basis said character display data or edge-enhanced character display data, and control means (15) which controls the input and output of said image display means, first edge-enhanced means, first selection means and first inversion means.
