Abstract (en)

[origin: EP0505264A1] The capstan (10) for handling cables (100) includes a central hub (200) provided with means for rotating about an axis D. According to the invention, the said capstan comprises, at the periphery of the said central hub, a plurality of recentering modules (300) each including a conveyor belt (310) arranged between two parallel cylinders. All the conveyor belts form a drum for the said capstan and the said drum has a winding zone (Z) intended to receive cable turns (110). One of the cylinders of each recentering module (300) is coupled to a driving motor (330) provided for moving the said conveyor belt in each direction parallel to the axis D of rotation of the central hub, and a device (410, 420) for controlling the position of the cables during the winding operates, in a synchronous manner, the said driving motors so as to move the conveyor belts in order to keep, by recentering effect, the said turns in the winding zone of the said capstan drum. Application to the general field of the handling of cables, and, more particularly, of fragile cables used in marine seismology. <IMAGE>
