[origin: EP0507040A1] The device for holding and clamping workpieces has a fixed clamping-jaw arrangement (1) and a clamping-jaw arrangement (3) displaceable relative to the fixed clamping-jaw arrangement (1). The displaceable clamping-jaw arrangement (3) contains a number of clamping jaws (14), each clamping jaw having at least one movable clamping head (5) and being acted upon by a pressure cylinder (24). The pressure cylinders are connected to a closed hydraulic system, and the displaceable clamping-jaw arrangement (3) is acted upon by a second pressure medium. Such a clamping device permits the clamping of several workpieces of different dimensions and irregular shape and is especially suitable for series production on machining automatics but also for lifting workpieces. <IMAGE>
