Abstract (en)

[origin: JPH05113500A] PURPOSE: To provide a melting furnace wherein clogging at an outlet opening is prevented by enabling continuous vitrification and/or densification of a toxic material such as a nuclear waste with microwave heating. CONSTITUTION: The furnace comprises two vertical ends 20G and 20D connected with a horizontal melting vessel 21. A material to be melted and a microwave are, through the first end 20G, introduced. In order to promote distribution of microwave output over the entire molten (22) surface, the melting vessel 21 comprises a certain section area originated from a horizontal upper part wall 31. At the second end part 21D of the furnace, a piston 26 which can adjust return of non-absorbed microwave is provided. This invention is applied to the eventual solidification by vitrification of a toxic material or a radioactive material.
