[origin: EP0508942A2] The steam generating capacity of a steam generator, used in particular for air humidification and in which the water to be heated is used as heating resistance, is controlled directly following a request signal (y), the heating current being continuously switched on and off by a timing signal with variable pulse duty factor. The possibility of deriving the water level values and electric conductivity values, required for controlling the water economy, from the temporal pattern (48) of this current, which possibility most importantly is lost with direct control of the heating current, is reestablished by the calculation of a current pattern (52) standardised on uncontrolled operation. With the invention, the reactivity and controlling accuracy of the steam generating capacity control of steam generators of the above type can be considerably improved. <IMAGE>
