[origin: EP0508945A1] The device serves for binding sheets which are provided with a bonding element at the edge to be bound. In order to heat the sheets, the device has an elongate electric heating apparatus whose length corresponds to the length of the back of the binding. A switching-on apparatus (19) is provided in order to activate an electronic circuit (5) by means of a starting signal at the moment at which the binding is placed on the heating apparatus (4). The device also comprises means (28, 34, 13, 14, 15) to produce information signals containing details of the thickness of the binding. The circuit (5) is designed to produce alarm signals from the starting signal and the information signals. The device has an at least approximately pyramid-shaped top part which is provided with an elongate opening (22) which can be at least partially closed by a swivellable wall (28). <IMAGE>
